What does this tool do?

The Missing Citations Finder checks whether your business appears on key UK business directories. Each directory listing (or "citation") is a signal to Google that your business is real, established, and trustworthy.

The tool checks 8–12 directories depending on your industry, including Yell.com, Checkatrade, Bing Places, Thomson Local, and industry-specific platforms like Treatwell or TripAdvisor.

This tool checks directories in real time. It searches each directory's website for your business name. Results may take 10–15 seconds.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your business name — use the exact name that would appear on directory listings.
  2. Enter your town or city — this narrows down directory searches to your area.
  3. Select your industry — different industries have different relevant directories. A plumber needs Checkatrade; a salon needs Treatwell.
  4. Click "Find My Missing Listings" — the tool checks each directory (takes 10–15 seconds).

What to do with the results

  • Missing (red): You're not listed. Claim or create a listing on this directory — most are free.
  • Found (green): You're listed. Make sure your Name, Address, and Phone (NAP) are consistent with your other listings.
  • Could not check: The directory blocked our check. Visit the site manually to verify.

Consistent NAP data across 10+ directories is one of the top local SEO ranking factors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are citations and why do they matter?

Citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) on directories, review sites, and other websites. They are one of the top ranking factors for local Google searches — they tell Google your business is real, established, and trustworthy.

Does this tool check directories in real time?

Yes. It searches each directory website for your business name and checks whether you appear in the results. This takes 10-15 seconds to complete all checks. Results reflect the current state of each directory.

What should I do with missing listings?

Claim or create a free listing on each missing directory. The most important step is ensuring your Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) are exactly the same across all listings — inconsistencies can actually hurt your rankings.

Which directories matter most?

Google Business Profile is the most critical. After that, Yell.com and industry-specific directories (Checkatrade for trades, Treatwell for beauty, TripAdvisor for restaurants) carry the most weight. Bing Places and Thomson Local are also important.

How many citations do I need?

Research shows that businesses in the Google local pack have an average of 80+ citations. Start with the 10-12 most important directories for your industry, then gradually build from there. Quality and consistency matter more than quantity.

Why does it say "Could not check" for some directories?

Some directories block automated checks or require JavaScript to load results. When we cannot verify a listing, we mark it as "Could not check" rather than guessing. Visit those directories manually to verify your presence.

What is NAP consistency and why does it matter?

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. Google cross-references your business details across the web. If your phone number is different on Yell than on your Google profile, it weakens the trust signal. Keep every listing identical.

Do I need to pay for directory listings?

Most important directories offer free basic listings. Paid upgrades (featured placement, extra photos) are optional and generally not worth the cost for small businesses. Focus on claiming free listings first and ensuring NAP consistency.
