Let AJ Web Design close the gap

We'll build you a website and online presence that outperforms your local competition.

What does this tool do?

The Competitor Presence Report looks up the top businesses in your industry and area using Google Places, then compares their online presence against yours. You'll see real business names, their actual Google ratings, review counts, and whether they have a website.

Your own row is scored based on what you tell us about your current website, Google Business Profile, social media, and reviews.

This tool uses live data from Google. The competitors shown are real businesses found via Google Places API.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your business name and town — the tool searches for competitors in your area.
  2. Answer the four questions about your current website, Google profile, social media, and review count. Be honest — the comparison is only useful with accurate inputs.
  3. Select your industry — this determines what type of businesses are searched on Google.
  4. Click "Compare My Presence" — the tool fetches real competitor data (this takes a few seconds).

Understanding the scores

Each business is scored out of 100 based on: website presence (25 points), Google Business Profile (25 points), review count (up to 25 points), star rating (up to 15 points), and social media (up to 15 points).

The gap between your score and the top competitor shows how much ground you need to cover to compete effectively for local customers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the competitors shown real businesses?

Yes. The tool searches Google Places for businesses matching your industry and location, then returns real business names with their actual Google ratings, review counts, and whether they have a website linked to their profile.

How is my score calculated?

Your score is based on what you tell us: website presence (up to 25 points), Google Business Profile completeness (up to 25 points), review count (up to 20 points), star rating (up to 15 points), and social media activity (up to 15 points).

Why does it take a few seconds to load?

The tool makes live API calls to Google Places to search for businesses, then fetches detailed information for each one. This real-time lookup takes a few seconds but ensures you see current, accurate data rather than cached or fake results.

Can I see competitors in a different area?

Yes. Enter any UK town or city in the location field. The tool will search for businesses in that area, so you can compare yourself against competitors in neighbouring towns or areas you want to expand into.

What does the social media column show?

The Google Places API cannot check social media presence, so competitor social media is marked as "Unknown". Your own social media status is based on what you select in the form. We are working on adding social media checking in a future update.

How can I close the gap with top competitors?

Focus on the areas where you score zero: get a professional website if you do not have one, claim and complete your Google Business Profile, ask satisfied customers for Google reviews, and set up active social media profiles. Each step adds significant points to your score.

How often should I check my competitors?

Check quarterly to track how your competitive position is changing. New businesses appear, existing ones improve their profiles, and review counts change. Staying aware of the competitive landscape helps you prioritise improvements.

Why do some competitors score higher than me?

Competitors who have invested in their online presence — professional website, complete Google profile, active review collection — will score higher. The score reflects visible online signals that influence how Google ranks businesses in local search results.
