Google Business Profile Setup & Optimisation

Google Business Profile Setup and Optimisation — AJ Web Design Cambridge

A Google Business Profile is the single most important free tool for any trade business that wants to appear in Google Maps and local search results. When someone searches "electrician near me" or "Cambridge plumber," the three results shown above everything else — with a map, star ratings, and a call button — are Google Business Profiles. Not websites. Profiles.

I completed GBP setups for 12 trade businesses across Cambridge and Cambridgeshire in 2024. What I keep seeing is the same problem: a profile that exists but hasn't been properly configured. Wrong primary category, no service list, generic description, and photos uploaded without labelling. Google looks at all of it. Getting these details right is not optional if you want map pack visibility.

Google Business Profile setup and optimisation — a one-off service that creates or fully completes your Google listing so your trade business appears in Google Maps and the local search pack. Covers categories, services, description, photos, NAP data, service area, and verification. From £77.

I used to think category selection was a minor detail. I was wrong — the wrong primary category can drop you entirely from map pack results, even when you're well-established locally. After optimising a Cambridge plumber's GBP that had the wrong category and no service list, their map pack impressions went from under 50 per week to over 300 within six weeks. The profile had existed for two years. The issue wasn't the account — it was the configuration.

Why a half-completed profile costs you jobs

Google uses your GBP data to decide where to rank you, and whether to show you at all. A profile with the right primary category and a complete service list gives Google clear signals about what you do and where. A profile with a generic category and no services is harder for Google to match to local queries.

Profile element Incomplete Fully optimised
Primary category Wrong or too generic Matched to your exact trade
Service list Empty or one line Full list with descriptions
Business description Default / missing Keyword-informed, 750 chars
Service area Not defined Correctly set for your radius
Photos None or unlabelled Labelled, current, varied
Opening hours Default / missing Accurate including special hours
Worth knowing: Google can accept edits to your profile from members of the public — these "suggested edits" can change your address, phone number, opening hours, or business name without notifying you. The 3-month review cadence package includes monitoring for and reverting any unwanted changes.

How it works

  1. 1
    You send me access

I need owner or manager access to your Google Business Profile account. I'll send you simple instructions — takes about two minutes. No passwords shared.

  2. 2
    I complete the work

I go through every field systematically: categories, services, description, hours, service area, photos. For new setups I handle verification too. Typical completion: 2–3 hours.

  3. 3
    You get a written summary

A short document covering what was done, what was changed, and what to watch for over the coming weeks. For the 3-month review cadence, I check back in at 4 weeks and 8 weeks.

What you need to provide

Owner or manager access to your GBP I'll explain how to add me — takes 2 minutes

Business address or service area details Town names or postcodes you cover

Your main services and rough price ranges Even a rough list is enough to start

Any photos you want used Or I can advise on what types to take

Once your profile is live and optimised, pair it with review request automation to build your Google reviews automatically after every job. Reviews are the second biggest local pack ranking factor after categories.

What clients say

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Your website helps you rank in regular Google search results. Your GBP is what gets you into the map pack — the three businesses shown at the top of local searches with a map. They are separate systems. Most trade businesses I work with get more calls from their GBP than from their website.
That's exactly what the optimisation package is for. I audit what's there, fix any wrong or missing information, add your service list, update photos, and make sure every field Google looks at is properly completed. It takes around 2–3 hours and costs £77.
A new or freshly optimised profile typically needs 4–8 weeks to gain traction in the map pack. Some businesses see improvements faster, especially in lower-competition areas of Cambridgeshire. I don't promise instant results — anyone who does isn't being straight with you.
The setup and optimisation packages are one-off services. If you want ongoing management — responding to reviews, posting updates, refreshing photos, monitoring for spam edits — ask me about it when you get in touch. The Monthly Site Care Plan can include GBP monitoring.
Google only allows one profile per physical location. If you have multiple premises, yes — each can have its own profile. If you're a sole trader operating across a wide service area from one location, the right approach is a single well-optimised profile with a clearly defined service area, not multiple profiles.
Yes. I'll guide you through the verification process or handle it directly where possible. Requirements vary — some businesses verify by phone or video call, others need a postcard to the business address. For new setups this is included in the £97 price.

Coverage: Cambridge and across Cambridgeshire

I work with trade businesses across Cambridge, Ely, Huntingdon, St Ives, St Neots, Saffron Walden, Newmarket, Royston, Peterborough, and the surrounding area. As GBP setup and optimisation is done remotely, I also work with businesses across the East of England and wider UK. All I need is a short call and access to your Google account.
