Google Business Profile Setup & Optimisation
A Google Business Profile is the single most important free tool for any trade business that wants to appear in Google Maps and local search results. When someone searches "electrician near me" or "Cambridge plumber," the three results shown above everything else — with a map, star ratings, and a call button — are Google Business Profiles. Not websites. Profiles.
I completed GBP setups for 12 trade businesses across Cambridge and Cambridgeshire in 2024. What I keep seeing is the same problem: a profile that exists but hasn't been properly configured. Wrong primary category, no service list, generic description, and photos uploaded without labelling. Google looks at all of it. Getting these details right is not optional if you want map pack visibility.

Existing profile optimisation — £77

Full audit against Google's ranking factors Every field checked systematically
Category correction Primary and secondary categories fixed
Business description rewrite Keyword-informed, 750 character target
Service list build-out Full list added or expanded with descriptions
Photo review and fixes Any labelling issues corrected, gaps identified
Why a half-completed profile costs you jobs
Google uses your GBP data to decide where to rank you, and whether to show you at all. A profile with the right primary category and a complete service list gives Google clear signals about what you do and where. A profile with a generic category and no services is harder for Google to match to local queries.
| Profile element | Incomplete | Fully optimised |
|---|---|---|
| Primary category | Wrong or too generic | Matched to your exact trade |
| Service list | Empty or one line | Full list with descriptions |
| Business description | Default / missing | Keyword-informed, 750 chars |
| Service area | Not defined | Correctly set for your radius |
| Photos | None or unlabelled | Labelled, current, varied |
| Opening hours | Default / missing | Accurate including special hours |
How it works
-
1
You send me access
I need owner or manager access to your Google Business Profile account. I'll send you simple instructions — takes about two minutes. No passwords shared.
-
2
I complete the work
I go through every field systematically: categories, services, description, hours, service area, photos. For new setups I handle verification too. Typical completion: 2–3 hours.
-
3
You get a written summary
A short document covering what was done, what was changed, and what to watch for over the coming weeks. For the 3-month review cadence, I check back in at 4 weeks and 8 weeks.

Since launching AJ Web Design in 2024 I've worked exclusively with trade businesses. I know the categories, service structures, and the specific fields that matter for plumbers, electricians, builders, and landscapers — I'm not applying a generic checklist.
